The RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to go boating safely on Inland Waterways. From basic engine checks, through safety afloat. Intensely practical (no heavy classroom sessions) with a focus on boat handling, you will spend as much time on the water as you need. The IWHC also qualifies you to gain an International Certificate of Competence - necessary for Europe. We include the associated CEVNI qualification (for inland European waters)
Just to say how much we both enjoyed our course on Sunday and we have already recommended you to others! Thank you!” Inland Helmsman's Course.
“We would like to thank you for a very enjoyable and informative day last Tuesday, it was carried out in a nice relaxed manner but we both feel we have come away with a lot, keep up the good work!” ICC & CEVNI
Just to say thank you for a most enjoyable and informative day. The course was very comprehensive and delivered in a most friendly and professional manner. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this training school. The fact that you tailored the course to suit my specific needs was much appreciated.
Many thanks Paul Aldis , Big Dog Ferry (www.bigdogferry.co.uk)
Exceeded my expectations by far. A great confidence boost. The whole day was a continual learning experience. IWHC
An alternative to the IWHC is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course - displacement. Again a very practical course, but with more attention to what you may find in estuaries and the larger rivers and waterways. The Powerboat Level 2 Course is ideal if you feel you may like to move onto coastal waters, or perhaps to a faster (planing) boat later.
On some rivers and canals you will need to use a Marine VHF Radio; perhaps to call Swing Bridge Operators or Lock keepers. The VHF-SRC (Short Range Certificate) is a one day course which includes an assessment and will qualify you as a Marine Short Range Radio operator.
